YouTube and Vimeo Build HTML 5 Prototype Player
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010
Online video is constantly evolving. Not only will Vimeo join YouTube in offering 1080p HD video this week, but they have also jumped on the HTML 5 bandwagon. What does this mean for Flash video? Is it dead? Not likely.
There are definitely some limitations at this point. HTML 5 is still in its infancy. HTML 5 does not yet support videos with ads, captions, annotations or full screen video, and the browser support is limited as well.
Last week I was interviewing an Interactive Art Director. When I asked where he was with his Flash skills, his response was that “Flash is dead.” Take note web designers and developers … this is not true. This landscape is not going to change overnight. Clients are going to pay for Flash banner ads and slick, custom Flash sites for the next many years. Don’t let a prototype in technology give you the excuse to keep a toolset out of your toolbox.

Lady GaGa: Polaroid’s new Creative Director
Thursday, January 14th, 2010
The 5 grammy nominee, Pop star Lady GaGa becomes Polaroid’s new Creative Director. How bizarre is this. What does this 23 year old singer actually know about technology? So far, she apparently has designed a set of “heartbeat” headphones that evoke more fashion than technology for the company. The basis of the partnership is to help Polaroid to appeal to younger demographic. Good luck.

New Year Seeks Name
Tuesday, January 5th, 2010
Two thousand ten
Two thousand AND ten
Two-o-one-o.
Twenty Ten
20–10
2.10
Y210
Ought 10
Does it really matter what we call this year? Apparently, yes, it does. Search “pronounce 2010,” and you’ll get all sorts of hits from news sites, blogs and forums. These people are legitimately confused citizens worried about the correct way to verbally ring in the New Year. Talk about needlessly contributing to the sleep deprivation of America.
It’s true. We have been subjected to an entire decade of blandly named years. Not since Y2K has there been a more snappily named year. The year 2000, my friend, was the epitome of a great year name. Y2K wasn’t just the name of the year; it was the name of potentially cataclysmic event (that didn’t actually happen, but STILL!). It ranks right up there with great names like Bono and Barney.
Since then there hasn’t been much to get excited about. I mean, two thousand and one didn’t really have the power to whip people into a verbal frenzy. That goes the same for every year since then. Not a sliver of creative freedom could be taken for almost nine years. I guess one could considered that a slump or a lull…whatever.
No wonder people are dying to debate this seemingly inconsequential topic. Personally, I believe it’s one of those things that will just figure itself out. People will eventually gravitate toward something, right? But consider all the options! Seriously, 2009, eat your heart out.
So what is the consensus, you ask? What have all these people, academic and otherwise, agreed upon? Twenty ten. Easy. Concise. Rolls off the tongue.
I’m so glad we figured that all out.
