Larry-
Great post! and Buffa, it's funny you mention a purpose...because I have previously authored a blog on exploring this very process. It's an interesting post as well, although it does not contain any explicit language, it does however create a concise but thought provoking view on what one might ask oneself before embarking on a social media strategy. There is also a pretty nifty video that showcases some staggering (although out of date) social media statistics and how they relate to the consumer shopping experience. http://www.schuppco.com/blog/?p=1304

You've got it right, Buffa. The problem is when the so-called "pros" rush to an end without any real expectation of what their client's presence can or should accomplish. Then, when it's all said and done, the client is "doing" social media, but they're not engaging the communities with pertinent conversation. They're just spattering cyberspace with more clutter.

For me, the strategy-generating website is funny because it so simply points out how serious the smoke-and-mirrors game is for some marketers. And I love irony.

Larry-
Great post! You hit on a number of interesting points. Your observation on individuals "not really being relevant to the online community because they don’t know what to do or say once they’re out there" is spot on. Contrary to a lot of opinions out there (quite possibly your own) I do believe that brands need to "be on" social networks. People hang out on Facebook, people share information through Twitter, and people entertain and educate themselves on Youtube, etc. etc. I do however think there needs to be a thought process prior to hopping on. As your post clearly states, there needs to be strategy. There needs to be a defined purpose to your brand. If you don’t know what your purpose is, and the values that you want to communicate, neither do we.

All in all though, I just think it's a tough time for businesses in general because they almost need to restructure themselves to cater to new consumer behaviors. However as your post hits on, it's the responsibility of marketers/pr pros/social media "gurus" to more or less "man up" and admit their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to social. If we fluff everything up with the above "strategies" in the end, we're just clouding up and already clustered mess of misguided information.

Maybe the idea is that Quesada Mexican Grill ISN'T "real mexican" at all? It's using the negative of the reverse of the stereotypes to let you know it's just "themed" fast food, without any authenticity whatsoever?

And they forgot the end of their tagline, "Real Mexicans Know Where To Get Real Mexican ... And This Isn't It."

But to answer your question - No, understanding what a stereotype is and laughing at it does not make you a racist. At least, not by my definition.

"There is no conclusive interpretation, nor definitive resolution for the discrepancy."

Great quote that means absolutely nothing. Personally, I think the French figure skating judge was involved.

Here's another good take on the whole situation.

Awesome video Larry. I'd love to see a video like this for television and radio just to see where the numbers are in comparison to the internet. I think it would prove the power of digital even more.

And what's up with Ashton Kutcher being the "Twitter spokesmodel." I get that he has a media production company and "gets" social media, but out of everyone in the world, I find it hard to believe that his account warrants the most followers. Oh well. End rant.
